Do-It-Yourself Activism
January 20, 20025
The Day Democracy,
As We (Thought) We Knew It,
Died
Activism needed reinventing. Honestly speaking, American democracy needed reinventing, still does. There is so much more to this story, but this stands as my place holder for when I have the time to write the full account.
This project began the day Caroline Kennedy published her open letter. I woke up thinking, “Monkey see, monkey do — I can do exactly what she did,” and used the early version of this website as my only credential. A friend sat with the PDF and hand‑typed her letter into a Word template when OCR wouldn’t cooperate, so I could study its bones: how she opened, where she put the story, how she named the stakes. From there I started writing my own letters into the same shape, aimed not at donors or headlines but at the committees that pull the strings on what gets heard and what gets buried.
This was always about ignorance to empowerment, one template, one story at a time. Speaking against unqualified power and perfidy in plain sight.
Echolalia aversion, WTH?
Neurodivergence runs in the family. I don’t fit into a mold. Never have, guess I never will. I always mentally shrugged at the southern phrase “The good Lord broke the mold when he was done with that One!” It left me thinking, “Mold, what mold? I was free handed when I was made!”
A lot of times I have to create a method that does not exist. In my defense, I stand on the fact that Richard Feynman, (“Surely You’re Joking, Mr. Feynman!”) invented his own methods of mathematics as a boy. Of course he had to unlearn it to learn conventional math, but he is my spirit animal!!!
My quirks manifest themselves in unexpected ways. Right now, I am compelled to civic activism. But I have a hangup with repeating a script. I can’t just make an activism call and read the script. It makes me feel dirty. So, what do I do?
I ask a friend to help me make a template. In this way I can create my own words, my thoughts, my perspective. I can come into my power and find my voice. I know that there are lots of everyday Janes and Johns out there that need a different kind of nudge. So this template is an offering on the altar of decency and courage. We must find a way to be a keeper of the flame, a protector for Lady Justice herself in this time of trial for our Nation.
I cannot think of a more relevant topic or a more admirable author for such a letter to emulate. It was a powerful inspiration to use the open letter Caroline Kennedy wrote on behalf of all of us dated January 28, 2025. This is vaguely a template, partly a guidance method and mostly an inspiration to find your voice!
If any part of Alice’s story touches your own, then I ask you to help make sure the cycle of tragedy ends.
